Liberty or Security?

July 4th, 2007 by Brian

Thanks to Chris Brogan for the suggestion on this holiday in celebration of independence to re-read the Declaration of Independence.  I was particularly struck by the line “...all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.”

After watching Keith Olbermann’s special comment last evening, and reviewing reasons the colonies stated for their decision to dissolve allegiance to the King of Great Britain, I note with added perspective my country’s incremental departure from many of the principles for which the people of the colonies risked everything in their effort to reclaim.  Even with the most profound respect for the office of President of the United States, and presuming best intent of the current holder of that office, policies of the current White House administration and policies of the former King of Great Britain are too similar to ignore.

Indeed, the brave people at that time knew well the human tendency to put up and shut up until such time as pain or hunger or desperation motivates our action.  On a national level, when will be that time?  And, more to the challenge by Chris in his post that, as individuals, now is always the time to reclaim our independence from following familiar paths that merely lead us to mediocrity and instead blaze trails toward our individual potentials.  The founders felt the natural human need to feel safe.  To not rock the boat.  To keep their place in line.  To do what they were told.  To patronize tyranny.  They knew the lull of complacence but began to realize complacence offers only an illusion of safety.  Our founders knew that to hold liberty, they first had to release their grasp of security.

Which do you want more?  Liberty or security?

Happy Independence to you.
