Have you ever been bugged by something you later learned to respect? The geometrid caterpillar finally earned a little respect to go along with my irritation after the little beasts defoliated the clump of white birch in the yard. I wish something would eat the damned things. They’re everywhere! I sweep the creepy-crawlies off the porch about every two hours just to keep a path open for myself. These little inchworms must taste horrible to birds and bats. If these mini-monsters were delicious, word would spread faster than secrets at a church picnic.
Sometimes a new perspective delivers a bit of appreciation, so I decided to take pictures and do a little research. I learned these soon-to-be moths belong to a big family. Some moths make a type of noise that bats have associated with bad taste. So, much like avoiding a bad podcast, bats learn quickly not to devour certain moths deploying bits of aposematic sound. Sounds pretty clever, no?
