Today is the day. Thursday. March 22, 2007. This morning, I went to the “Bum Rush the Charts” site and clicked on the link there to “Buy Mine Again” by the independent band Black Lab. Buying the song with that link will help some college student in the process.
Bum Rush the Charts feels to me today a bit like the last election. I wonder if the turnout will be good. I wonder if the people who say they’ll be buying “Mine Again” on iTunes will actually do it. I wonder if, like the last election, the result will restore some balance.
The folks I vote for in elections are rarely my first choices. I cast my vote to support a particular outcome. Black Lab’s music has never been chosen for an Audio Attitude show. I think they are a good band. I like their attitude. But, they never made it to first choice when I compiled a playlist.
Today, however, I chose to buy the Black Lab song to support an outcome. Although big media’s reaction to the little guys getting a song to number one on iTunes might be fun to watch, I’m more interested in how I’ll feel tomorrow when my dollar helped restore a little balance.
The days of record company executives choosing music for us are over. Independent artists are realizing the power of connecting directly with listeners. Listeners are learning to choose what they want to hear.
(standing tall on my soapbox now…)
Attitude adjustment! Behavior change! Participation! Choices! Independence! Democracy! Freedom!
I love it!
Whew! Okay, I hear the music but where are the balloons?
